How to get the most from your OceanConnect auction

INVITE ALL YOUR PREFERRED SUPPLIERS.
More suppliers create more competition, and a lower final cost. Preferred suppliers who are not yet online can still participate in the auction, as OceanConnect staff will contact them for you and bid online on their behalf, similar to telephone bidding in a physical auction room.

DON’T FRAGMENT THE MARKET.
Real competition requires that every bid for your business comes online, through the site. This way every supplier sees the amount of the lowest bid at all times, and can consider placing a lower bid that will save you money.

TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. When creating your transaction, keep in mind:

  • business hours of the ports involved
  • lunch hours
  • national holidays

OceanConnect’s team of maritime industry experts is available to offer advice on ideal auction dates and start times. Whenever possible, enter your auction details well in advance to obtain the best price.

SEND MESSAGES.
Using the instant messaging feature to negotiate with suppliers can get you an even better price. For example, if there are two suppliers at the same price level, you can tell them that they need to improve their price to win the business. Or if the market is below what suppliers are offering, send an instant message telling the suppliers to ’Please Improve, the market is one dollar lower.’

GET A GOOD PRICE...OR WALK AWAY.
If you start an auction, and for whatever reason you decide not to stem the bunkers, you can walk away. OceanConnect’s flexibility allows you to cancel the auction, or re-hold it a few days later if you think the market will soften.
